With all of these conditions ensured so that you can enjoy your visit autonomously and comfortably, you just need to know how you can make the best use of this prime area of the city. But, don’t worry, because we’ve put together some ‘must-have tips’ to guide you!
Avenida da Liberdade: the home of elegance
In a poem entitled Avenida da Liberdade, Alexandre O’Neill, an important poet from Lisbon, invites us to: “Let us go up and down the Avenue, / While we wait for another / (or for the other) life”. In fact, this artery has an unavoidable influence on Lisbon city life, making it a must-visit point.
The iconic layout of this avenue draws directly from the famous Champs-Élysées, the most beautiful and famous route in Paris. It was in 1879 that Avenida da Liberdade, until then called Passeio Público, took on the form we know today. Designed for great circulation, it has a width of 90 meters and is more than a kilometre in length.
In this way, this iconic street became, from the start, the showcase of the city’s elegance. Little by little, its extension was occupied by buildings of bold design that quickly became the maximum expression of Lisbon’s architectural avant-garde. Even so, this “explosion” of modern urbanism was balanced with the construction of tree-lined boulevards, which still today paint the avenue green.
Cheerful nights at Praça da Alegria
Very close to your accommodation, on the other side of the avenue, you will find the iconic Praça da Alegria. This square is home to one of the city’s most fascinating secrets: the oldest jazz club in Europe, where the most renowned names in national and international music have played.
Created in 1948, during the Salazar dictatorship, the Hot Clube de Portugal has always been known for its freedom and avant-garde spirit. This remains, therefore, the ideal place to spend a relaxed and well-watered night of good music and many improvisations.
Right next door is the historic Parque Mayer. Inaugurated as a complex dedicated to entertainment in 1922, it soon became the “Lisbon Broadway”. Here, among the various leisure spaces, one could watch the vaudeville shows, a very Portuguese genre, but also fado or circus shows. Today, Parque Mayer continues to bring life to Lisbon’s nightlife. Stay tuned to the Cineteatro Capitólio program, or for a really fun evening visit the Teatro Maria Vitória!
Discover the charms of Jardim do Torel
Right next to Avenida apartments, one of Lisbon’s most beautiful secrets is hidden. We are talking about Jardim do Torel, which has recently been renovated. Here you will find a pleasant green space with grass to sit on; flower beds with aromatic plants, an outdoor gym, some benches with poems by Portuguese authors, and an urban beach (get your bathing suits and towels ready!)
What makes this place truly special is the viewpoint at the top of the hill, with a panoramic view of the city. From here, you can calmly contemplate Avenida da Liberdade, Downtown Lisbon or the Tagus River. Get your camera ready! You will want to take many photographs of this magical place.
Finally, a very useful tip: to reach Jardim do Torel, you can take the Lavra Lift, the oldest lift in the city of Lisbon. Opened in 1884, this funicular is classified as a National Monument. Are you going to miss this opportunity?
