Bairro Alto: the home of tradition
A more attentive walk through Bairro Alto reveals picturesque traces, in some arcades and corners, of 16th-century origin. We are, therefore, in one of the most historical places in the city of Lisbon.
At first, this area was full of people connected to the sea, then the Jesuits arrived and, with them, the nobility. Only later, about 200 years ago, journalists and fadistas came to “furnish” the neighbourhood’s nights with life and animation. There is a reason why these streets are still famous today throughout the metropolis.
In the middle of the 19th century, dozens of artists and writers moved to Bairro Alto. Quickly, cafés, restaurants and taverns were filled with all-nighter intellectual gatherings. Bohemia became intellectualized and Bairro Alto became a blazing centre of amusement and debate. With the arrival of democracy in 1974, freedom invaded these streets, and the neighbourhood became fashionable, as it continues to be to this day.
Silence, “Fado will be sung”
One of the undisputed hallmarks of Lisbon is its fado. The musical genre, born in the 18th century, among the popular sections of the city has, in the meantime, become an authentic identity card for those who live here. In one of the most famous songs, by the renowned fado singer Carlos do Carmo, Lisboa Menina e Moça, we can hear: “And in the highest neighbourhood of dreams / I put the fado I knew how to create”. He is, of course, talking about Bairro Alto.
Bairro Alto apartments offer their guests the unique possibility of immersing themselves in the atmosphere that sets the stage for this “strange way of life”, in the words of the greatest fado singer of all time, Amália Rodrigues. Here, the chords of the Portuguese guitar fill the restaurants, cafes, taverns and alleys with a magical quality.
Every night, this ritual, steeped in centuries of history, is performed. Be sure to live it with the attention and devotion it deserves. You can do it in iconic fado houses in Bairro Alto, such as Café Luso, which opened in 1927, Adega Machado, open since 1937, or O Faia, which has marked Lisbon’s cultural life since 1947. Through these and other spaces, you will have passed and continue to pass the most important names of fado. Unmissable!
