Praça do Rossio: the imposing centre of the city
Praça do Rossio has been, for several centuries, one of the most central and busy places in Lisbon. This was, after all, the stage for countless remarkable events in the History of Portugal; and one of the most emblematic business cards of the metropolis.
After the violent earthquake of 1755, this square underwent a reconstruction, gaining its current architectural design. The official name of this square is Praça D. Pedro IV, known as the first emperor of independent Brazil. In its centre, we can appreciate the statue here raised in honour of the monarch.
With a colossal column standing at 27.5 meters tall, this monument represents D. Pedro surrounded by four figures that symbolize Strength, Moderation, Prudence, and Justice. However, in addition to the magnificence of this statue, there are many other points of attraction in Praça do Rossio.
D. Maria II Theatre: History at the centre of the stage
Strolling through this very special square, you will see that there are many historical points to get lost in. One of them is the National Theatre D. Maria II, named after the queen who became known in history as “the Educator”. It opened its doors in April 1846 and, since then it has undeniably marked the country’s cultural production.
This ravishing stage has already seen great national and international stage directors, actors, and playwrights. The man considered to be the father of Portuguese theatre, the writer Gil Vicente, is represented in a sculpture that further embellishes the building’s façade, in a neoclassical style. Take a look at the theatre’s programming and spend a magical evening here.
A visit to Santa Justa Lift
Some consider it the ex-libris of Downtown Pombalina, there are those who argue that it is the most beautiful of the lifts scattered throughout the metropolis. The truth is that Santa Justa Lift is one of the main attractions in the vicinity of the Baixa Chiado apartments.
Inaugurated in 1902, it was designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, responsible for the Eiffel Tower. It was only in 1907 that it operated on electrical energy; before that, it was run on steam. It is now known for its neo-Gothic style mirrored in its cast iron construction and decoration with filigree elements.
From the top of the 45-meter tower, you have one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the city of Lisbon. Take the time to contemplate the beautiful contrast between the movement of the city centre and the sparkling tranquillity of the Tagus River. Some images are not easily forgotten – this is one of them. Then, take some time to stroll around and feel the unique dynamism of the Chiado streets and stores.
