Bairro da Estrela: the beauty of a city’s prime area
Let’s go back to the 18th century. By this time, Lisbon was still expanding, reconfiguring its spaces. In this process, the area, in which the Estrela apartments are located, was chosen by many noble and bourgeois families.
The memory of that time is kept within the richness of its architectural heritage. There are many houses and mansions, perfectly preserved, that offers refinement to this neighbourhood. It is not by chance that embassies from several countries are located here, such as Austria, China, the Netherlands or Switzerland. It is also here that the Official Residence of the Portuguese Prime Minister, the Palacete de São Bento, was built in 1877.
Today, this neighbourhood is an area of family housing par excellence, where intense commercial activity is vigorous as well. In addition, Estrela apartments enjoy the privilege of being a 15-minute walk from Largo do Rato, where various transport can take you to all points of the city. And you don’t have to go far to explore some must-see tourist attractions.
A cultural visit to the Basílica da Estrela
A few steps away from Lisbon Serviced Apartments – Estrela, you will find one of the most imposing monuments in Lisbon. The Basilica da Estrela was built at the end of the 18th century, emerging from a promise made by Queen Maria I, who wished to have a male child. Note that her tomb is located inside the church.
This majestic building, designed by architects Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Reinaldo Manuel, mixes Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It is marked by its colossal white dome and two bell towers, which are an ex libris of the city of Lisbon. Do not miss the opportunity to climb up to its terrace, to have access to one of the most breathtaking views of the city.
A peaceful stroll in Jardim da Estrela
Right in front of the Basilica is one of the most sought-after green spaces by Lisbon residents. Among its ponds with ducks, swans, geese and carp, playgrounds, green lawns and a wrought iron gazebo, this is the place to hang out, run, read, stroll, play or, simply, take the opportunity to breathe and relax.
Built in 1842, this garden, with more than four hectares, has exuberant and diverse vegetation. Here, you will find stunning trees such as jacarandas, ginkgo, araucarias or dragon trees, for example. Therefore, this is the scenario that regularly hosts several events, such as cinema cycles, jazz festivals or fairs for antiques and craft products. There are plenty of reasons to set out to discover this green oasis in the city centre!
