In the words of Sophia de Mello Breyner, the greatest Portuguese poet, here the eyes navigate in this “long light of blue and river”. One contemplates and does not forget. Downtown Pombalina: the reborn soul of the city
The Madalena apartments have a privileged view of Lisbon’s soul. Located between Praça do Comércio and the Sé de Lisboa, they are the ideal option for those who want, with all its comfort, to have close contact with the magical atmosphere of the city centre, where historical attractions and special places to be discovered abound.
With the great earthquake of 1755, the largest recorded in Europe, the whole area was devastated. In a literal sense, “Carmo and Trindade fell”. However, from these ruins was born, thanks to the pragmatic and avant-garde urban planning of Marquês de Pombal, the configuration that made this one of the noblest areas of the city.
In this case, all roads will lead to one of the nerve points of the Lisbon centre: Praça do Comércio. After all, we are talking about one of the most beautiful and imposing squares on the Old Continent, to which it is impossible to remain indifferent. From here, the doors of the Tagus estuary, of outstanding beauty, open to the world.
Overlooking the world
Praça do Comércio, built on the site where the Royal Palace was located until 1755, is flanked by a set of buildings that overlook the river. This has always been the most pompous of the metropolis’ reception rooms. Through this fluvial portal with a wide view of the horizon – the Cais das Colunas – kings, emperors and heads of state disembarked. The ground that was trodden here certainly has many secrets to tell!
This square is, however, marked by two key elements. In its geometric centre, the statue of José I, the king who faced the consequences of the great earthquake, mounted on his horse Gentil. On the north side, we find the Arc de Triomphe on Rua Augusta, where emblematic figures are represented, such as Vasco da Gama, Nuno Álvares Pereira or Marquês de Pombal himself.
Rua da Madalena: access to Lisbon’s tradition
The Madalena apartments share their walls with the most genuine spirit of the city. Very close, in fact, at just a short walk of four minutes, we find the Sé de Lisboa. This medieval cathedral, whose construction dates back to the 12th century, is one of the most important monuments in the country, given its priceless religious, artistic and historical value.
Its façade, in Romanesque style, presents an unmistakable central rose window that marks the landscape of the square, where it will most likely intersect with a typical tram. From there, if you continue up the hill, you will quickly reach one of the most breathtaking spots in the city: the Portas do Sol viewpoint.
In this square, located at the top of one of the seven hills of Lisbon, each corner presents an authentic living postcard of vibrant colours. The estuary of the Tagus River, in its bucolic calmness, gains contours of art in movement.
Then, continue to explore Lisbon’s popular neighbourhoods. Only then will you be able to breathe the soul of the city in its pure state. Dive into the streets, alleys, and find out what the tradition of the neighbourhood is made of.
