Mouraria: the cradle of fado, home of tradition
Mouraria is named after the Moors who occupied this area after the conquest of Lisbon by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. Being here is taking a trip to the distant year of 1147, and many stories have added up between the walls of this neighbourhood in the centuries that followed.
These were the streets that saw fado rise. These were the streets that inspired the creation of such a Portuguese song, a melody of ‘saudades’, nostalgia and bohemia, but also a mirror of the city’s multiculturalism in the 19th century. Let us go back to the 1840s. By that time, a young woman from this neighbourhood became the first icon of the fado tradition. Her name, Maria Severa, will always be remembered – even by Amália’s voice.
From Severa to Mariza: fado lives here
“Ai Mouraria/From the processions passing/Da Severa in a longing voice/From the guitar sobbing”: thus, says the poem celebrated by the voice of Amália Rodrigues, the biggest name of Portuguese fado. In fact, there are few certainties in relation to Severa. We know, however, that those who heard her voice sing about the difficult and poor context of typical Lisbon neighbourhoods, which she knew so well, fell in love.
On Rua do Capelão, a few meters from Mouraria apartments, you will find a sign that reads: “Maria Severa Onofriana lived in this house, considered at the time the sublime expression of Fado. She died on 11/30/1846 at the age of 26, Lisbon, 3/06/89”. After all, the profound mark of Severa’s legacy in the neighbourhood has survived the passage of time. In the 20th century, Fernando Maurício, the “King of Fado and Mouraria”, lived here, for example; and Mariza, the most internationally well-known contemporary fado singer.
A few minutes’ walk from your accommodation you will find some of the most typical fado houses in the city. You can spend an unforgettable evening in iconic locations such as the Clube de Fado, next to the Sé de Lisboa; the Mesa de Frades, in the beautiful Alfama neighbourhood; or the Maria da Mouraria, which occupies the house where Severa lived. Remember, here silence is sacred: let yourself be carried away by the magic of this unique heritage.
Martim Moniz Square: have you been around the world today?
Today, the Mouraria district is known for the dynamism offered by its multiculturalism. Dozens of nationalities and cultures gather here, making this one of the liveliest centres in the city. At the centre of all this liveliness is, of course, the famous Martim Moniz Square.
It is named after a warrior who, in 1147, helped D. Afonso Henriques conquer the city. According to legend, for the siege to be successful, he sacrificed his own life – a heroic gesture that the city has not forgotten. After all, this very special square continues to be proof of that.
A stroll through Martim Moniz Square is an authentic trip to the four corners of the planet. With a privileged view of the Castle of São Jorge, here you will find dozens of shops, small kiosks, restaurants and cafes with Asian, African, South American, but also Portuguese inspirations, otherwise this would not continue to be one of the most popular neighbourhoods in the city!
You will likely find musical entertainment here, especially at the weekend, or even some markets with organic products and handicrafts. Here, colour and diversity reign.
